Victoria Monument in Kolkata was built as a memorial for Queen Victoria. It's a gorgeous marble building surrounded by a manicured garden. On the hike down from the Parasnath Hills pilgrimage we saw a large troupe of macaque monkeys. The largest and most important temple on the Parasnath pilgrimage is Shikharji Temple. There were many pligrims walking up the long steps to this temple. There was even a photographer selling his services. A Jain priest walking the pilgrimage circuit on Parasnath Hills. Jain priests often are nude, carrying only a broom, as per their minimalist ideals. In the picture you can see one of the Jain pilgrims bowing to the priest. An important Jain tenant is non-violence. The broom is used to sweep the ground in front of him to ensure he doesn't step on any insects. A Jain priest on the pilgrimage to Parasnath Hills. All he has with him is his broom. Jain priests and nuns either wear white clothing or go nude. The broom is used to sweep the ground in front of him so that he does not step on and kill any insects. Jains are minimalists and strict vegans. Non-violence is one of their main tenants and that includes killing insects.
