On Our Great Canadian Roadtrip we were treated to many amazing rural landscapes, cute colourful towns and dramatic coastal views. Choosing our favourite pictures was no easy chore, but we’ve narrowed it down to our top twenty.

1. Cape Spear Lighthouse, Newfoundland

An ominous sky was forming behind Cape Spear Lighthouse. The eerie light illuminated channels in the ocean and a large, dark cloud took over the sky. This stormy scene on Canada’s most eastern point became one of our favourites pictures.

2. Trinity, Newfoundland

From the hill above town, we looked down to see colourful heritage homes spread across a small peninsula surrounded by azure blue water. In the distance a lighthouse was sticking far out into the water at the end of a pointy cape. Trinity is picture-perfect.

3. Qudi Vidi, St. John’s Newfoundland

Undoubtedly the cutest, most photographed neighbourhood in St. John’s is Quidi Vidi. A collection of fishing shacks sprinkled along the edges of a small protected harbour creates an incredibly picturesque spot and one of our favourite pictures.

4. Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia

Who wouldn’t want to relax in one of these colourful chairs on the edge of the charming village of Peggy’s Cove? It’s known for its lighthouse, but we found the town to have even more appeal with bright homes surrounding a quiet fishing harbour.

5. Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia

Colourful moss covered blue slate rocks surround a small inlet. Old wooden fishing shacks line the shore, while fishing boats bob in the water. This idyllic scene seems almost too perfect to be real.

6. The Battery, St. John’s, Newfoundland

Wooden historic homes seemingly cling to the rock as they climb the cliffs above the ocean. They look to be built in the most implausible spots.

7. Greenpoint Lighthouse, Newfoundland

The red and white candy cane stripped lighthouse stands alone on a windy cliff. Huge, jagged rocks poking out from the rough ocean make this dramatic scene even more spectacular.

8. Cape Forchu Lighthouse, Nova Scotia

A fog kept coming in and out, obscuring our view of Cape Forchu Lighthouse. It added mystery to the harsh rocky landscape surrounding the lighthouse.

9. Percé Rock, Gaspé Peninsula, Québec

Percé Rock changed its look with the changing positions of the sun throughout the day. Watching the sun rise beside the interesting rock feature was the perfect way to begin our day.

10. Petty Harbour, Newfoundland

Petty Harbour is the quintessential Newfoundland fishing village with colourful homes huddled around a busy harbour. The surrounding green hills provide the final touches to the colourful scene.

11. Cape St. George, Newfoundland

Standing high above the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean, we admired the long, step coastline that forms Cape St. George. It was the view we had been hoping to have in Atlantic Canada.

12. Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

Three churches, perfectly placed along the waterfront in the pretty town of Mahone Bay make the perfect picture postcard scene.

13. Spillar’s Cove, Newfoundland

Huge sea stacks dot the cliff edges and large rocks fill in the deep inlets of Spillar’s Cove. Bonavista Peninsula had some of the most spectacular coastal views in Eastern Canada.

14. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Touted as being Canada’s most colourful town, Lunenburg is unmatched. Old Town looks like a decorated tiered cake with homes, painted in vibrant colours, climbing the hill above the harbour.

15. Cape Tryon Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island

The white lighthouse proudly stands atop bright red cliffs of Cape Tryon. The colour of the soil let’s you know it’s on Prince Edward Island.

16. George’s Island, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Pretty George’s Island can be seen from Halifax Harbour. The sailboat passing in front added the finishing touches to this beautiful scene.

17. Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick

At high tide kayakers paddle by sea stacks that appear as islands in the Bay of Fundy. At low tide their bases are exposed and you can walk under these 5-stories high pinnacles. Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park is a phenomenal place to see the world’s highest tides.

18. St.Peter’s, Prince Edward Island

Bucolic scenes like this are very typical throughout PEI. St. Peter’s heritage church positioned beside a farmer’s field, filled with hay bales, was one of our favourite examples.

19. Trinity, Newfoundland

A colourful home and its reflection peak through the dense fog that filled in Trinity Harbour.

20. Beach Point Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island

When we first saw the lighthouse, we were disappointed with its less than perfect condition. In the end though, we came to love its unfinished appearance.

  1. Great photos. I like the Cape Spear Lighthouse with the storm clouds in the background and the colors in the Percé Rock. I like is some of the other photos that you have a type of tilt shift effect making the houses look miniature.

    1. Thank you Joseph, there were many opportunities to capture great shots in this fascinating part of the country! Thanks for your kind comments, Maggie

  2. This is a lovely photo album. I’m especially mesmerized by the extensive use of color on the buildings by the towns’ residents.

    1. At first we thought it would be one or two towns, but almost every town was cute and colourful. It brightens up even the grey days. Maggie

  3. Fabulous pictures. Glad you enjoyed your Atlantic visit. When I lived in Ontario and decided to move back hone, nobody could understand why I wanted to move back east. I think you get it.

    1. We can definitely see why you moved back. We love Canada’s east coast. We did look for homes on PEI, NS and Nfld on realtor.ca when we got home. It’s still on our minds. Maggie

  4. Amazing series of pictures and info!

    1. Thank you Indira!!

  5. Lovely captures, Maggie!! Loved the colorful heritage homes picture!

    1. Thank you Jyothi, there are so many colourful towns in this part of Canada, it was hard to chose between them 😊 Thanks for your comments. Maggie

  6. A worthy group for sure Maggie. I also vote for the moody Cape Spear shot. Looks like you had a fabulous trip and some pretty great weather. Thanks for taking us on your journey. Allan

    1. It was a great trip that will be hard to beat for a while. Thanks for your comments Allan, Maggie

  7. Great photos! I can only imagine how long it took to narrow down to 20 after such a wonderful trip.

    1. It was difficult. It was supposed to be 10, then 15. We had to stop at 20! Maggie

  8. All the photos are amazing. I like 1 and 9 the best.

    1. Thanks John, Percé Rock seems to be a favourite. Thanks for you comments! Maggie

  9. Oh yes, that stormy sky on your first photo is a definite favourite! And the colourful villages as well (especially Quidi Vidi). But you can catch me anyway with a sunrise/sunset picture … your sunrise image at Perce Rock is stunning. I can see why it was difficult to “only” choose 20 favourites 😉. Well done with a great selection of amazing photo’s!

    1. It was pretty tough to chose, we had originally planned on 10 but we couldn’t decide! There are so many amazing spots in that part of Canada . Thanks for your comments Cora, Maggie

  10. Lovely collection of pictures to highlight your travels out east. I can almost smell the salty ocean breeze. I love all the various lighthouses and that sunset at Perce Rock is gorgeous!

    1. Thanks! We’d already love to go back! Maggie

  11. Absolutely gorgeous photos! You captured the heart and soul of the maritimes!

    1. Thank you, that’s so kind. It definitely has a large place in our hearts. Maggie

  12. What a wonderful and colourful collection of beautiful photos, Maggie. I’ve grown to love Newfoundland & Labrador through your travel posts and hope to visit it one day as it’s a place that adventure travellers’ dreams are made of! Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xxx

    1. It is indeed Aiva, we fell in love with Newfoundland and I’m glad it captured your heart too. I do hope you get there one day, there is so much to explore from wild nature to charming villages and of course the most warm, friendly and funny people. Thanks for your kind comments. Maggie

  13. Wonderful series of pictures! I love the Flower Pots!

    1. Thanks! The Flower Pots were remarkable both at high and low tides. Thanks for your kind words. Maggie

  14. All the photos are gorgeous! It’s hard to choose a favourite, though, I do like the Prince Edward Island one with hay bales and a church in the distance. It reminds me of a TV show The Road to Avonlea which wasn’t filmed there, but I believe that the author lived on the island and was inspired by its landscapes.

    1. Oh yes! It looks just like Road to Avonlea! LM Montgomery is a Canadian icon. We visited Green Gables in PEI which is also from her books, Anne of Green Gables. Every Canadian has read that one 😉 Thanks Leighton, Maggie

  15. A great gallery from a wonderful trip! I loved the chairs at Peggy’s Cove and that astonishing sunrise the best.

    1. Thanks Ruth, those chairs have been very popular, and who doesn’t love a sunrise over the ocean. 🙂 Maggie

  16. Good shot of that dark sky there! I also love the yellow moss alongside the blue rocks. It’s not often you see yellow and blue coexist in nature

    1. Thanks, there were so many unbelievable places. Nature is quite amazing isn’t it 🙂 Maggie

  17. Stunning pictures! I visited Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island a few years ago and it was so fun to see some familiar places in your post. What a beautiful part of Canada-can’t wait to go visit there again one day.

    1. Thanks, we absolutely loved it! It’s very hard to chose a favourite 🙂 Thanks for your comments, Maggie

  18. Great photos. I never tire of lighthouses, nor of photos of Peggy’s Cove. Wonderful idea to share these photos. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Suzette, I love lighthouses too:) We purposely visited so many and I love each one 🙂 Maggie

      1. Beautiful photos. Thank you!

  19. Great photos. I’m heading to a couple of these places this summer—can’t wait.

    1. Oh great! We loved our trip to The Maritimes. Have fun!! Maggie

  20. Beautiful photos! Again I’m struck by how colorful the buildings are there. Here in the US, more and more it is beige, black, white…..so boring and uniform.

    1. In Western Canada it’s the same, beige, grey homes. We thought there would be one or two colourful homes but it was in village after village and even the capital cities. Makes even a stormy day more cheery 😊 Thanks for your comments! Maggie

      1. I forgot the gray. In Seattle, which is already filled with gray skies most days, homes are gray with gray counters, gray carpeting, gray or white walls…..(: Have you noticed how most car manufacturers have reduced their color options to dark maroon, white, black, gray, silver. My favorite vehicles have been a beautiful lime green, true lime green not the chartreuse putrid one.

  21. A great selection, I can see why they are all favourites 🙂 If I had to pick just one it would be the Blue Rocks – there’s something extra special about the colours in that one!

    1. Blue Rocks is such a special place with the naturaly bright colours of nature. Thanks Sarah! Maggie

  22. I don’t know how you managed to choose, as you had so many good ones, but the finalists take me back to your great trip.

    1. It was difficult and we kept extending the number of favourites we had. Glad you enjoyed the recap of our roadtrip 🙂 Maggie

  23. It’s nice to see those beautiful photos from Canada’s easternmost regions again. I remember I was particularly impressed by Quidi Vidi and St. John’s after reading your posts on them. It’s amazing that such places do exist!

    1. Those communities are so different from anywhere else, and they’re exactly what the pictures show. You would love them if you’re ever able to visit. Maggie

  24. These photos are stunning! Thanks for the inspiration, really hoping I can visit Atlantic Canada this summer!

    1. Thank you Vanessa, we had such a great time exploring the east coast. I hope you’re able to go this summer! Maggie

  25. The most amazing road trip! Life is good. Mel

    1. Yes it was! Glad we were ‘forced’ to explore our own country 😊 Maggie

      1. Who knew there was an upside of Covid19!? 😉

  26. I’m really getting some Norwegian vibes here! Which, considering the latitude, are to be expected. Thanks for showing us a corner of Canada most, well, don’t get to see. Now I’m really bummed I’ve never managed to visit St. John’s at my previous job.

    1. I see similar scenes in posts from Norway, maybe the Vikings didn’t leave after all! St. John’s is a great little city. It has such a fun personality with many great neighbourhoods, too bad you didn’t get there. It’s not that far from the UK….. Maggie

  27. What a lovely recap of your adventure – all of your photos are beautiful, but I particularly love no.3 and I’m a big fan of the colourful deck chairs in no.4 too 🙂

  28. All the photos are great, but I love the one of the boat in Petty Harbour. Beautiful

    1. Thanks Ally, Petty Harbour is one of a kind in charm 🙂 Maggie

  29. What wonderful, colorful photos! So picturesque! I found myself wondering about life in such a lovely place, Wonderful post, Maggie and Richard! <3

    1. Thanks Cheryl, we wondered so much that we actually looked at realestate there! It would be a fune place in the summer but winter could be quite harsh I think. Thanks for your comments, Maggie

  30. That first picture is wonderful. I must have read some stories of Newfoundland very early in my life, and I’ve always had this notion of it being full of lighthouses battered in winter storms. It’s perhaps not entirely wrong, going by your series of posts, and is captured beautifully in this photo.

    1. I think that is pretty accurate for winter. Maybe you saw Kevin Spacey’s movie The Shipping News. That movie would definitely leave you with the impression that it has a lot of winter storms. Thanks for your comments, Maggie

  31. What a lovely collection of pictures of your amazing road trip.

    1. Thank you, we had an awesome trip across the country. Maggie

  32. Indeed, a beautiful set of pictures. The best ones are with the lighthouse. Another one worth mentioning here is Cape St. George.

    1. Thanks Arv, Cape St George was our first long coastline with imposing cliffs. We were so taken by it, I’m glad you were too 😊 Maggie

    Anita

    1. Yes and for good reason 😊

    1. Thanks Beth 🙂 Maggie

  35. No wonder you had trouble choosing your favorites (and “limited” yourselves to 20 😊). These photos are all fabulous and I wouldn’t be able to pick one over another.

    1. Thanks Tanja, it was a difficult job. Glad you enjoyed them 😊 Maggie

  36. A lot of amazing pictures. The Beach Point Lighthouse–I’ve never seen one like that before.

    1. Thanks Jacqui, it’s not a pretty white like most, but it has it’s own appeal. Maggie

  37. What a wonderful selection, Maggie! I followed your great adventure closely, and found so hard to pick a favourite place, as all of them have their own charm😊

    1. Every place was charming, we can’t really think of a part of the trip that we didn’t love. Thanks for coming along Christie, Maggie

  38. Oh wow; there’s so much there from the brightly colored houses, interesting rock formations and rugged shorelines. Looks like another place to add to the bucket list!

  39. Fantastic selection of photos, Maggie. Makes me wanna go! I absolutely love the ominous sky in the first photo. I find all the man-made colors mixed in with Nature soothing. Thanks for sharing! 🌞

    1. Thanks Lisa, We loved our trip to the east coast. It’s very photogenic 🙂 Maggie

  40. Ooh, that IS hard to choose. If I’m forced to, though, the Adirondack chairs in Peggy’s Cove ekes out the win. All are fabulous, though. What a treasure trove of memories that trip provided. Just curious: did you fly back home? Drive back the same route? A different route?

    1. That Peggy’s Cove picture is very popular and it’s a very good representation of how cute village is. You could take your RV and visit! We drove home, almost the same route but with very few stops. In other years we may have driven back through the US but not with Covid.

  41. I love your images, Maggie
    I found the lighthouses gorgeous

    1. Thank you Luisa, I love lighthouses. Maggie

      1. 🙏🥰🙏🥰🙏

  42. Wow, these are wonderful shots, Maggie! Hard to pick favourites but the lighthouse shots and Perce Rock are fabulous.

    1. Thanks Jo, We had quite a few amazing places to chose from 🙂 Thanks for you comments, Maggie

  43. WHOA, what awesome photos of your roadtrip! I don’t know how you got a few of these shots, but it was certainly well worth the risk! 😉 You are an awesome photographer! 😊📷😁

    1. Thanks Kym, The landscapes and towns in Atlantic Canada are amazing!! Maggie

      1. Maggie, just judging from those amazing pictures you shared, I’m sure the landscapes and seascapes are even more awesome! Thanks so much for sharing your great adventure! 😁💐👏🏼

  44. It’s a great collection of beautiful photos, lots of seashores, cliffs, lighthouses, grey skies but also fabulous sunshine sublimating the picturesque scenery of the region, which must not have been much different two centuries ago.

    1. Thank you, it has the feeling there that time doesn’t change too quickly, which is part of its charm.

  45. wonderful pictures! love the red houses and the colourful chairs

    1. Thank you Tanja, There are so many colourful towns in the east coast, we love them all 🙂 Maggie

  46. all stunning pics. the sunset is so amazing!

  47. Vibrant colors and lovely shots, hope one day I’ll visit the other side of the pond 🙂

    1. Thanks, we loved our trip to eastern Canada this summer. Hope you get there 🙂 Maggie

  48. The best of the best…..you know how to pick the moments.

    1. Thanks Michael, Maggie

  49. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of these!

    1. Thank you!! We fell in love with the east coast. 😊

  50. Great photos. I’m thinking this could be a great trip for us during the summer. I bet it’s a bit cooler in Nova Scotia! Sure is pretty.

    1. Summer is probably the best season to visit. Temperature will get into the 30s (low 90s) but it’s not as hot as much of the US. And there’s a nice ocean breeze to keep it cool. 😊

      1. I’d like the breeze and it would be fun to do a bit of genealogical research up there, maybe see where my great great grandfather used to live.

        1. Yes! That would be fun! Where in NS?

          1. Halifax I think…

          2. Halifax is a great city. We’ll worth a visit!
