On Our Great Canadian Roadtrip we were treated to many amazing rural landscapes, cute colourful towns and dramatic coastal views. Choosing our favourite pictures was no easy chore, but we’ve narrowed it down to our top twenty.
1. Cape Spear Lighthouse, Newfoundland
An ominous sky was forming behind Cape Spear Lighthouse. The eerie light illuminated channels in the ocean and a large, dark cloud took over the sky. This stormy scene on Canada’s most eastern point became one of our favourites pictures.
2. Trinity, Newfoundland
From the hill above town, we looked down to see colourful heritage homes spread across a small peninsula surrounded by azure blue water. In the distance a lighthouse was sticking far out into the water at the end of a pointy cape. Trinity is picture-perfect.
3. Qudi Vidi, St. John’s Newfoundland
Undoubtedly the cutest, most photographed neighbourhood in St. John’s is Quidi Vidi. A collection of fishing shacks sprinkled along the edges of a small protected harbour creates an incredibly picturesque spot and one of our favourite pictures.
4. Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia
Who wouldn’t want to relax in one of these colourful chairs on the edge of the charming village of Peggy’s Cove? It’s known for its lighthouse, but we found the town to have even more appeal with bright homes surrounding a quiet fishing harbour.
5. Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia
Colourful moss covered blue slate rocks surround a small inlet. Old wooden fishing shacks line the shore, while fishing boats bob in the water. This idyllic scene seems almost too perfect to be real.
6. The Battery, St. John’s, Newfoundland
Wooden historic homes seemingly cling to the rock as they climb the cliffs above the ocean. They look to be built in the most implausible spots.
7. Greenpoint Lighthouse, Newfoundland
The red and white candy cane stripped lighthouse stands alone on a windy cliff. Huge, jagged rocks poking out from the rough ocean make this dramatic scene even more spectacular.
8. Cape Forchu Lighthouse, Nova Scotia
A fog kept coming in and out, obscuring our view of Cape Forchu Lighthouse. It added mystery to the harsh rocky landscape surrounding the lighthouse.
9. Percé Rock, Gaspé Peninsula, Québec
Percé Rock changed its look with the changing positions of the sun throughout the day. Watching the sun rise beside the interesting rock feature was the perfect way to begin our day.
10. Petty Harbour, Newfoundland
Petty Harbour is the quintessential Newfoundland fishing village with colourful homes huddled around a busy harbour. The surrounding green hills provide the final touches to the colourful scene.
11. Cape St. George, Newfoundland
Standing high above the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean, we admired the long, step coastline that forms Cape St. George. It was the view we had been hoping to have in Atlantic Canada.
12. Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia
Three churches, perfectly placed along the waterfront in the pretty town of Mahone Bay make the perfect picture postcard scene.
13. Spillar’s Cove, Newfoundland
Huge sea stacks dot the cliff edges and large rocks fill in the deep inlets of Spillar’s Cove. Bonavista Peninsula had some of the most spectacular coastal views in Eastern Canada.
14. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Touted as being Canada’s most colourful town, Lunenburg is unmatched. Old Town looks like a decorated tiered cake with homes, painted in vibrant colours, climbing the hill above the harbour.
15. Cape Tryon Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island
The white lighthouse proudly stands atop bright red cliffs of Cape Tryon. The colour of the soil let’s you know it’s on Prince Edward Island.
16. George’s Island, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Pretty George’s Island can be seen from Halifax Harbour. The sailboat passing in front added the finishing touches to this beautiful scene.
17. Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick
At high tide kayakers paddle by sea stacks that appear as islands in the Bay of Fundy. At low tide their bases are exposed and you can walk under these 5-stories high pinnacles. Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park is a phenomenal place to see the world’s highest tides.
18. St.Peter’s, Prince Edward Island
Bucolic scenes like this are very typical throughout PEI. St. Peter’s heritage church positioned beside a farmer’s field, filled with hay bales, was one of our favourite examples.
19. Trinity, Newfoundland
A colourful home and its reflection peak through the dense fog that filled in Trinity Harbour.
20. Beach Point Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island
When we first saw the lighthouse, we were disappointed with its less than perfect condition. In the end though, we came to love its unfinished appearance.
