A long, thin stretch of land connects Avalon Peninsula to the rest of Newfoundland. The 5 km long Isthmus of Avalon runs between Trinity Bay in the north and Placentia Bay in the south. Since it was already a foggy day, our drive across this isthmus was a little unnerving.

We followed the winding road as it climbed around Gun Hill. On the other side was a wonderful surprise. Our eyes feasted on the stunning scene. Below us, a cute town was nestled on a small cape and enclosed in blue water. Trinity had stolen our hearts.

Standing on the ferry’s outer deck we watched as the flat topped mountains of Newfoundland got closer and closer. The town of Port aux Basques started to come into view. Seeing the rocky shore scattered with cute houses and mountains in the distance, we already knew we’d love Newfoundland.

The Past Meets The Present at The Fortress of Louisbourg
From across Louisbourg Harbour we had our first view of the impressive fortress. Surrounded by a stone wall, the Fortress of Louisbourg can be seen on its prominence as it takes over the end of the cape. This view made us excited to see what we’d find inside.

Cape Breton & The Cabot Trail
A rugged coastline surrounds a mountainous interior resulting in endless views. A small population on this large cape means that there is a lot of wilderness to discover. Connected to mainland Nova Scotia by a 1.3 km causeway, Cape Breton feels very remote.

The fog rolled in making the rugged cape feel very mysterious. Through it we could see only a vague outline of the tall, red and white lighthouse on the edge of Cape Forchu.

Our Great Canadian Roadtrip
Canada is a large country with incredible landscapes, colourful towns and welcoming people. A road trip across the country is the best way to appreciate its vastness and diversity. The Trans-Canada Highway travels 7,821 km (4,860 miles) across Canada making it the second longest national roadway in the world. It takes you to some of the most beautiful landscapes, historical cities and cute villages. It was the perfect road for Our Great Canadian Roadtrip.
